The penultimate week of the year threw up no surprises, as the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens blew everything else out of the water with a $391 million domestic debut. Comparisons are being made with Avatar as the seventh chapter in the space saga looks to put up a challenge for highest grossing film of all time.
However, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip and comedy Sisters also entered the chart and performed well with over $20 million each, pushing Mockingjay – Part 2 down into fourth. Spectre is also still clinging on in the top ten, but will likely drop in the new year as the Oscar contenders start to enter the field.
