Godzilla & King Kong Monster Mash Is Happening

Legendary have confirmed plans for a super movie monster showdown between Godzilla and King Kong, following recent changes to their upcoming movies that now makes a crossover film possible.

The long in development origin story Kong: Skull Island is a prequel to the events of the primary King Kong narrative, and for a while had been sitting in the scrip room at Universal. However Legendary Pictures, who are producing both monster movies, took the project to Warner Bros. to bring it in line with their Godzilla franchise. This now enables them to look at a mashup between the two characters once both Skull Island and Godzilla 2 have been completed.

The two characters previously clashed in the 1962 movie King Kong vs Godzilla, but as one tweeter pointed out, King Kong will need a drastic growth spurt to keep up with the rebooted Godzilla.

FACTOID: Godzilla, or Gojira, translated from Japanese means Gorilla Whale.

Kong: Skull Island is being slated for 2017 and helmed by new director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, while Godzilla 2 is set for 2018 and will bring director Gareth Edwards back, once he is finished working on Star Wars anthology film Rogue One. Very little is known about the plot for either movie, but if plans are afoot to develop a crossover, and it seems Legendary are even approaching Godzilla rights owners in Japan, then a segue will be expected by fans in the coming films.

Legendary Pictures are building a strong slate of monster movies, with Jurassic World and Dracula Untold also on their books, though it would be a far cry to hope the Jurassic universe will be integrated into this anytime soon. However, their expansion into China with Legendary East, and the upcoming co-production The Great Wall, are big signs that the studio are championing blockbusters with strong international, specifically Asian, appeal. Monster movies are just the ticket, so this could be just the start.

What are your thoughts on a Godzilla / King Kong crossover? Who should direct? And will monster movies replace the superhero genre as the next massive blockbusting genre?

Kong: Skull Island stars Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston and John C. Reilly and is due in cinemas worldwide from March 2017.

Godzilla 2 is directed by Gareth Edwards and due out in June 2018.
