Universal’s animated sequel / spin-off Minions has become the fourth film this year to reach over one billion dollars at the worldwide box office, and with huge films still to come 2015 looks set to break all records.
The animated comedy, a spin-off from the popular Despicable Me series, was expected to do well, but it’s long release has made it a slow burner, slipping under the radar of some of the other blockbusters. Universal have now had three billion dollar grossers this year, with Jurassic World and Furious 7 being the other two.
It marks a whopping year for the studio who so far have 28% of the entire US box office share this year. They are currently celebrating the success of Straight Outta Compton, and with Everest, Steve Jobs, and The Visit still to come there won’t be much slowing down.
Minions is perhaps the most surprising addition to the billion dollar club this year, but we could still just be halfway through our 2015 inductees. Ones to watch include Spectre, Mockingjay Part 2, and The Force Awakens.
