Disney’s D23 Expo: Gigantic, Toy Story 4 and Johnny Depp

It’s only been the first day of Disney’s annual fan convention, but already the internet is blowing up with gossip, announcements and star appearances at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.

Firstly there’s the news (via Films With Ferrara) that Disney will be animating a feature length adaptation of the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale. Set in Spain, Gigantic will is currently in production and due for release in 2018. The soundtrack is being written by Mr & Mrs Lopez – the duo behind Frozen. Not since the Sherman brothers back in the 1960s have Disney had such a well known songwriting partnership, but it looks like the Oscar winning husband and wife plan to continue their collaboration with the mouse house.

However, Randy Newman will always be the one who turns my head, with the soundtracks to my childhood, and details have also emerged of the Toy Story 4 plot (via Fan of Mickey). We already knew that it would not be a direct continuation of the third movie, and John Lasseter has revealed that this will be a love story between Woody and Bo Peep. It’s an interesting direction to take the series, but how will fans react? Toy Story 4 is due in 2017.

Alice Through the Looking GlassThere is also the much talked about Alice Through the Looking Glass – Tim Burton’s sequel to his successful Alice in Wonderland movie. Little is known about the project, but Disney have released a couple of posters, and it would also explain the appearance of Johnny Deep at D23.

Other updates include a sneak peak at posters for Pixar’s upcoming sequels, a first look at Finding Dory and other announcements relating to their Avatar land at Disney World in Orlando.

More info coming soon.
