The Star Wars universe has today announced that Lawrence Kasdan will write the Han Solo anthology movie, with Lego Movie directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord helming.

The spin-off movie will be one of several “anthology” films, which are essentially origin stories for various characters. This currently untitled project traces the early days of Han Solo, prior to meeting Luke Skywalker and the events of A New Hope.

Lawrence Kasdan is very familiar to Star Wars fans, having worked on the screenplays to The Empire Strikes BackReturn of the Jedi and the upcoming The Force Awakens. His involvement in the latest spin-off movie will be welcome news to many of the franchise’s loyal followers.

“We’re so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe,” said Lawrence and his son Jon, who is also co-writing. “They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy”.

Meanwhile, Christopher Miller and Phil Lord have worked on several big hits recently including The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street. Though an odd choice on paper, they may bring a fresh perspective, and an injection of humor into a script that is built entirely around an acerbic, quick-witted young smuggler.

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

The film is currently slated for 25th May 2018.
