The Coen Brothers headed up this year’s jury at the Cannes Film Festival, but make no mistake because this year’s batch of awards give very little recognition to English language films as Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan scoops the prestigious Palme d’Or prize.
As is customary with Cannes, many foreign language films which are often excluded at the bigger American awards (most notably the Oscars) are eligible for consideration. This leads to a much greater diversity and broader representation, and though last year still found space to award Timothy Spall and Julianne Moore, this year’s honors are more business as usual.
